Who are you then?
I recently had an exhilarating experience. Studying the Book of John.. in the very first chapter, the story of the high priests coming to ask John the Baptist if he was the Messiah. They came troubled trying to figure out who he was and asked, "Are you the Messiah?... Elijah? ... the Prophet?" "No, no, no," was his reply.
"Who are you then?" was their next question. John answering without hesitation, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord."
I got quiet for a minute and thought to myself, "If John knew who he was and what he was here for, is it possible for each of us to know?"
I dared to ask the Holy Spirit that question, "Lord, who am I, then? What would be the good works that you prepared in advance for me to do?" Eph 2:10. I stilled myself and listened. From inside of myself I heard a statement rise up, a perfectly fitting summary statement designed for me.
What a joy to have this gift! It has been fueling me since I heard it rise up within me even more than when it was simply working below the surface of my life. There is no greater joy than doing what we were created for.
The great news is that I don't think I'm special. I wonder if the Holy Spirit is lying below the surface of each of our lives available to answer that question. I've seen it happen many times for many people. When ideas are bouncing around helter skelter in your head if you just get quiet, the truth, God's voice, rises to the top :)
If you feel inside yourself a longing to hear that answer, I challenge you to ask him! Our good God ... our God of revelation! He has been active and showing us His desire to reveal himself to us since the beginning of time... through creation, through scripture, through other people & through coming to earth in Jesus, making a way to live inside of us through the Holy Spirit, to be a continual, day-by-day revealer of all truth.
I can't wait to hear how He showed up and the joy that consumes you as you walk in the answer.
