Your JWAG Questions, Answered!

1. Understanding the Practice

  • What is a “Giant”?

    • At first, many people think of characters they know from the Bible, like Ruth, David, or the Apostle Paul. But the spiritual giants in Journey with a Giant extend beyond those we find in Scripture. They include the millions of Christians who have faithfully run their race with Christ. Spiritual giants aren’t limited to those in full-time ministry—they come from every occupation, country, and time period.

  • Is this practice biblical or “woo-woo”?

    • Yes! It is biblical and “No!” it’s not woo-woo. The theme scripture is found  in Hebrews 12:1-2:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith.”

It’s not “woo-woo” at all. We’re not talking about spiritualism or calling up dead people to speak to us but simply opening our lives to the example of the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us to help us run our race.

2. Choosing a Giant

  • How do I find or choose my Giant?
Chapter One of the book guides you through the process step by step.

  • What if I don’t know who my Giant should be?

By the end of Chapter One, you will! It’s normal to feel pulled toward other giants or to question your choice. Over time, you’ll see that whether your journey unfolds exactly as planned or not, God directed you to the Giant you chose.

  • What if someone picks the same Giant I chose?

    • That’s perfectly fine! Your outcomes will be unique because of who you are and the specific ways God is working in your life. Sometimes it’s even fun to see how two people with the same Giant have very different experiences.

  • What if I start my journey with one Giant and then want to journey with a different Giant?

    • Hold steady! Stay with the one you chose. Trust that God guided your choice and is working through it. His ways are higher than ours. He knows way better than we do, who we need to walk with and why.

3. The Journey Itself

  • How do I “journey” with a Giant?

    • This is a spirit-directed process, so there is no set template. Each month, you’ll prayerfully choose what to focus on from your Giant’s life and which resources to use. During the month, read the weekly articles, journal your thoughts and quotes, and engage with their story in hands-on ways. Some months might include books, YouTube series, podcasts, artwork, or spiritual practices. “Journeying” alternates between study and active engagement.

  • Can I do this by myself? Or should I do it with a group? How can I join a group?

    • The book works both ways. You can journey with a giant on your own or with others. Doing it with a group can multiply transformation, in your own life and others’, magnify the joy of the journey and hold you accountable.

You can start a small group by asking a few friends to join you, using the 2-page Discussion Guide, ask your church or book group to host, or join virtual groups as they form.

  • Is it hard?

    • No! You can journey in the way that fits you best. If you love studying, dive into multiple books and resources. If you more of an audio, visual or hands-on learner, you can focus on podcasts, YouTube videos, and experiential options.

4. Time & Commitment

  • How long does this take?

    • About 20 minutes, three times a week. The book is designed as a one-year journey, but you can go faster or slower. A year gives time for God’s work to go deep, but even a shorter journey can be meaningful.

5. Outcomes & Experience

  • What should I expect to experience as a final outcome?

    - A life with God that feels more like an adventure.
    - New perspectives on faith as your Giant expands your view.
    - Growth in your own faith through receiving from your Giant’s relationship with God.
    - Increased empathy for yourself and others, learning from your Giant’s strengths and weaknesses.
    - Steps forward in your calling, guided by your Giant’s faithfulness.

  • Can I “do it wrong”? What if I feel like I’m doing it wrong?

    • Not really because there is no set way to walk with a giant. Everyone’s journey will look different. The only way to do it wrong is to stop before the year is done. If you feel like you’re doing it wrong, take that to God in prayer. It’s not uncommon to feel like you’re doing it wrong because life is messy and often doesn’t look like we think it should. often when we reflect later, we see His work was always present.

6. Resources

  • Where do I buy the book? Is there a digital copy? Audio version?

    • Available at most retailers, including print, Kindle, and audiobook. See the Journey with a Giant page on my website for links.

  • Are there outside resources beyond the book that I can explore?
