Thinking TOO Big?
Disappointment comes when our expectation does not equal reality. We have been told to dream big… expect huge things… even in our expectation of what we will accomplish as a Christian in our life time. But the truth is God is the potter and we are the clay and we have no idea if he wants to make us a glamourish dish used frequently with people of influence in the White House or as a drinking glass used in the home of a common family.
I just started reading an article about a man who is getting ready to get out of prison. He is a christian and has spent 30 years of his life there. He said his goal was to get out of prison and "do something good with what was left of his life". That's it. I love those words.
It really struck me because it is such a contrast to what many of us want and expect will be the sum total of our earthly lives. And yet, his goal is enough and I feel like I would be better off today with that goal in my mind for my life than the subconscious grander goal that I think I carry. There is a burden lifted that making dinner, doing office work, helping my children with school, blessing a few people in my church would be enough if that's what God has planned for me. It's up to Him whether we are a vessel like a Billy Graham or average church and community member.
There is greater joy, at times, in thinking smaller.
