Journey with a Giant Bible Reading Plan--When a Frustration Becomes a Gift

Sometimes the things that begin as frustrations turn out to be the greatest blessings.

When Journey with a Giant was released into the world, there was such joy and momentum. People were picking it up, discovering the overlooked, biblical practice of walking with a spiritual giant, and—just as I’d hoped—sharing it with friends, churches, and small-group leaders.

Everything was going beautifully!

And then… a question started surfacing.

· One friend shared that her church loved the idea of using Journey with a Giant for women’s small groups—but then decided against it because it didn’t include a Bible study component.

· Another friend, who was on the leadership team at her church and hoping they would use Journey with a Giant in their small group ministry, asked the same question as she flipped through the book.

· Then, in my own church, our women’s ministry leader joyfully announced that our group would be using Journey with a Giant—with one simple caveat:
“It has a Bible study component… right, Lori?”

At first, I felt frustrated.

Wasn’t this practice already rooted deeply enough in Scripture?
Didn’t readers already have Bible studies and sermons that would answer that spiritual need in their life while Journey With a Giant answered a different one?

But after a deep breath—and prayer, I wasn’t defensive but thankful. Their responses were not criticism, but a gift. A loving invitation from God, revealing a possible stumbling block… and calling me to create something even richer for those longing to be in the Word as they journeyed with a giant.

So, I listened.

As I prayed and pondered what a Journey with a Giant Bible Reading Plan might look like, the Lord gently wove together four strands from my own story and recent conversations:

  • Memories of my earliest days walking with Him, studying Scripture hidden away in my bedroom with just my Bible, a notebook, a dictionary, and a concordance.

  • Watching a new believer in my small group encounter God through simple, Spirit-led reading

  • A dear friend’s testimony of her Bible study practice--slowly savoring a single verse at a time.

  • The new Bible study method, which the Lord had recently brought across my path.

At first, I imagined a plan through the Gospels and Acts. But even that felt like too much. Brainstorming with a friend about my wrestling, I asked her, “What section of scripture could I use?”

She replied, “What about Hebrews 12?”
Eureka---the place where Journey with a Giant began!

Grabbing my Bible, I opened it to see how many verses were in that chapter. And then—what felt like a holy accident—I opened my Bible to Hebrews 11 instead.

The Hall of Faith.

Forty verses walking us through the giants of the Old Testament… followed by the glorious conclusion in Hebrews 12, beginning with the JWAG foundation in verses 1 and 2:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses…”

Fifty-one verses.
One verse per week with a final week for reflection for an entire year.
With space to slow down, and follow the Holy Spirit’s leading through Scripture, what He stirs within you, and His revelation. It was perfect!

Today, I’m so grateful to share the Journey with a Giant Slow Scripture Bible Reading Plan with you—a gentle, Scripture-centered companion for anyone longing to walk with God, hear His voice, and journey faithfully alongside a spiritual giant.

What started as frustration has become a beautiful, powerful, God-ordained gift.

Isn’t that just like Him?
