January Surprise

The days rush on continually full force.  Why are the days so full of “to do’s” and running here and there?  These different things that fill our lives are blessings.  I wouldn’t want to do without them.. but there is a wonderful phenomenon that comes to us by surprise deep in the heart of winter when we’re chugging as hard as we can to get things done.

The weather turns nasty and we get buried in deep, white snow and everything stops.  Everything so urgent on your calendar must be postponed.  Somehow we survive letting go of the things that were non-negotiable just a few hours ago.  We’re given a bonus of hours that we never expected lavished upon us.

We can’t go anywhere.  We can’t be “out there” and do, so we stay home and our souls find rest in the captivity.  Ah, a few precious hours... a day that we thought would play out so differently now stripped of it’s complexity and all our own.   Precious January surprise.
