A Box, a Dream, and a Whisper from God

I lifted the garage door--and there it was.
A plain brown box, stamped Penguin Random House.

It took my breath away—for a minute I didn’t know what to do. Then, I picked it up gently, and carried it up the stairs to the dining room table, where it sat—unopened—for days, waiting for just the right moment.

When you’ve waited for something for so long, the moment feels too holy to rush it.

Glancing at that box, I remembered all the steps of the journey. The day the idea first came as a spark. Walking with Mister Rogers for a year and drafting all the articles and leading others to walk with their giants. The writers’ conferences and pitches, the day I signed the contract, and the months of editing that followed. Canceling pretty much everything else in my life so I could honor this sacred work. The joy, the doubts, and the tears. The patience and the grace of my Penguin team. The new relationships and the new me that emerged.

Now, another shift begins.

  • As people lie in bed tonight, reading the words that I’ve shaped for so long, will it make any sense?

  • Will the book do what I hope it will?

  • Did I choose the right words?

  • Am I ready for what comes next?

Then, in the stillness, the Spirit whispers:

"You don’t have to try to 'be' anything.
Everything you need to be, you already are.
It’s in you.
God’s plan is in motion."

And I exhale.

The same God who planted the seed in the cabin years ago will cause it to grow in the ways He has intended all along.

I can enjoy the journey, and keep doing what He’s led me to do all along—take the next step He places before me and watch His glorious plan unfold.
